The event:

The event is the first of its’ kind to be organised in Clanfield and follows the exceptional example of local races in surrounding villages, such as the Denmead 10k organised by the Denmead Striders and the Hambledon Hilly organised by Smart-Fit Training Ltd.

Like many local races, it has been organised to benefit the local community. Local business group, Clanfield Online (www.clanfieldonline.com) first discussed the idea in November 2015.

Anne Cleaver of Clanfield Online commented, “As part of a review of the funding received from local businesses who were keen to support the activity of Clanfield Online, we felt that a local race was a great use of some of our donations. Not only is the race designed to generate additional income to pour back into the community, but it also encourages health, wellbeing and the importance of community to all participants and supporters”.

Whilst the participants of Clanfield Online were keen to move forward, they were also interested in seeking out local assistance for coordination and planning. As a result, Clanfield Joggers (www.clanfieldjoggers.co.uk/) and Smart-Fit Training (www.smart-fittraining.co.uk) were approached for advice and support; Both have been instrumental in the planning thus far.

The first Clanfield Challenge will have three races which all begin and end within Clanfield. The 1k race will take place within South Lane Meadow and the 5k and 12k start and end in Clanfield, looping round the local tracks and roads.

Ken Finlay of Clanfield Joggers said “The routes have been designed to provide appropriate challenges based on their length. The 5k is a great starter for those who don’t run too often or prefer a shorter distance. The 12k is great challenge taking runners immediately uphill to the South Downs Way, with stunning views west towards East Meon. Then the 1k is a perfect run for children to have their first taste of running in a fun and safe environment.”

If planning goes to schedule, the Clanfield Challenge is expected to have 100 runners in the 1k race, 200 runners in the 5k race and 300 runners in the 12k race. For runners interested in taking part, more information and entry can be found on the new website: www.clanfieldchallenge.co.uk
